There are many reasons an addict would refuse treatment for his or her illness. It could be that the affected person fears the effects of alcohol withdrawal. Sadly, this is the case for many alcoholics, and they will prolong their addiction because of this fear, ultimately leading to negative consequences for themselves and others, usually those closest to them.
Battling Inner Demons
An example of someone in this situation is former alcoholic and husband of actress Nicole Kidman, Keith Urban. He was eventually ???forced??? into checking himself into a rehabilitation clinic as his loved ones feared he was ???going too ???far.
Forty-nine-year-old actress Nicole Kidman has recently shared her story of how she supported her husband through his addiction to alcohol. The couple have been married since 2006, and Nicole has admitted that she had no choice but to take a step back while her partner battled his inner demons and tried to overcome his severe addiction.
After suffering from addiction for many years, Keith finally admitted himself to a rehabilitation centre in 2007. Nicole revealed that she told Keith that he had to make this change himself and that this was a battle that she could not fight for him. Nicole explained, ???It???s a very big thing for people like me who go ???I can take care of you. I can do it.??? At some point, you just have to say ???I love you and I???m here when you decide to do the work. If you don???t, then that???s it.??? It???s not easy, but there???s an extraordinary life if you do get there through help.???
Keith decided to act upon his wife???s suggestions and said that she was an ???inspiration??? that got him through his addiction to alcohol. He said, ???Nicole listened to her heart and did what she felt was the right thing to do. To see that kind of love in action, that???s very moving and deeply inspiring and just makes me want to be a better man.??? Since his visit to rehab, the couple have said that they are stronger than ever. They now have two children, eight-year-old Sunday and five-year-old Faith.
They Have to Save Themselves
Keith acknowledged that living in a house with only women has proved to be difficult at times, especially because he grew up in a home with only males. He said, ???Nicole is an incredible mom. Loving, maternal, and (she is) teaching me a lot about how to raise children, especially girls. I have no reference for girls.??? Directing her comment to anyone suffering from alcohol addiction, Nicole said, ???I???d advise you to put your hand up, to reach out. There is absolutely help out there. You can???t save somebody, they???ve got to save themselves.???
Fear of Alcohol Withdrawal
There are many people in the same situation as Keith ??? they have allowed their addiction to get to a point where loved ones have to give them an ultimatum; the alcohol or them. This is often a scare tactic that the loved ones??? hope will shock the addict into recovery. However, one of the biggest fears when it comes to overcoming alcoholism continues to be alcohol withdrawal.
Alcohol withdrawal symptoms vary in intensity depending on the individual. It is true that in some cases, the individual will experience a lot of discomfort, but in most cases, the addict will only experience mild discomfort. These symptoms can include vomiting, nausea, anxiety and tremors, but the severity will often depend on several factors. These can include the length of time the individual has been abusing alcohol, how frequently it was abused, and how the individual reacts to the detox.
Help and Support
If you are prolonging your suffering because of a fear of what alcohol withdrawal will mean for you, the most important thing you could do is to push past these fears. Try to focus on the result; a sober, happier and healthier lifestyle. You will be able to show your loved ones that you want them to be in your life and actually mean it. Instead of turning to alcohol when you need comforting, turn to your loved ones for support.
